Barbara Mey

Licensed Mental Health Counselor

I feel that I act as a guide for my clients on their journey toward self-awareness and self-discovery. I strive to provide a safe and peaceful space in which clients can learn new coping skills to enable them to move toward their life goals.

I tailor my counseling style to each individual client’s needs and use psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions, working to ensure that my clients are comfortable with my therapeutic approach.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and hold a master’s degree from Providence College as well as a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Salve Regina University.  Prior to joining Sheehan Psychotherapy, my most recent experience was at a substance abuse clinic where I worked with clients in group, individual, and family settings.  Before that, I spent almost ten years in a community mental health setting where I worked with a wide range of clients, including individuals living with mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, substance abuse, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.  I have experience helping clients who are coping with low self-esteem, recovery from trauma, relationship and family issues, and adjustment to life changes.  I am also experienced in treating individuals who are coping with codependency, including adult children of alcoholics/addicts or other dysfunction, and family members and partners of alcoholics/addicts.

I believe that a supportive, caring, and honest relationship with each client is of the utmost importance and I strive to maintain a present, compassionate, and open-minded consciousness throughout the therapy process.
